Click bots and dedicated click tracking
↧
A bot-click refers to an email click performed by a machine to verify the safety of a link. Inbox providers use their bots to click links in emails before any human user. This helps the providers protect users from phishing by making sure the links are safe and not a malicious URL.
Bot-clicks can impact your marketing because they give a false sense of engagement for a profile. It may appear that a customer clicked the link in an email because they were interested in the content, but in reality, a machine performed the click and the user did not perform the action.
Setting up dedicated click tracking allows a client to show your own domain on click tracking links rather than the default Klaviyo domain, this is beneficial because customers and inbox providers can easily recognize your brand, making the links in your email more trustworthy.
*Note that in the table above, the trk subdomain is an arbitrary choice. You can use any subdomain as long as it is not being used by another DNS record. However, the 161779 subdomain needs to be entered exactly as shown.
While customizable this should still align with the root domain you send from. For example, if your sender email address is “bob@bobsburgers”, the tracking domain should be something like “trk.bobsburgers.com”. This helps reinforce your brand with subscribers who click on your email links.
